Defibrillators

Servicing and Maintenance

Servicing defibrillators is vital because they’re used in time-critical, life-saving situations — and there’s no margin for error if one fails. Routine servicing verifies the unit can deliver the correct energy output, complete its self-tests, and provide a reliable shock and ECG analysis when required. It also checks the condition and expiry of pads/electrodes, the integrity of leads and connectors, and the health of the battery/charging system so the device is ready at a moment’s notice. Regular inspections catch common risks early — like degraded batteries, damaged cables, poor pad contact, software faults, or failed capacitors — helping prevent unexpected downtime. Most importantly, planned servicing supports patient safety, staff confidence, and audit/compliance with clear records showing your defibrillators are maintained to the manufacturer’s specification and ready for use.

Did you know that AED’S / Defibrillators come under the governments Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

Defibrillators (AEDs) should be maintained regularly to ensure they are ready to use in an emergency. This includes checking the batteries and pads, performing a full health check annually, and updating readiness indicators.

Maintenance requirements

  • Check batteries and pads: Replace batteries and pads before they expire. Batteries typically last 4–7 years, but pads are single-use.
  • Perform a full health check: Have a professional perform a full health check annually. This check ensures the device can recognize different heart rhythms and respond appropriately.
  • Update readiness indicators: Ensure the readiness indicators are up to date to alert you to any issues.
  • Perform weekly visual checks: A responsible person in the workplace should perform weekly visual checks.
  • Maintain records: Keep records of the checks you perform.

Why is maintenance important?

  • Defibrillators can fail if they are not properly maintained.
  • Maintenance ensures the defibrillator is ready to use in an emergency.
  • Maintenance can help identify faults that might not be obvious during a self-test.
